With the new graded evaluation system finally being imbibed by schools across the nation from October onwards; the need now is to train teachers in using the system appropriately and effectively. Keeping the same motive in mind a training workshop was held at the Laxman Public School in Hauz Khas, New Delhi. Attended by over 100 CBSE teachers the workshop was a big success.

Teachers came from all parts of the country from various cites like – Jaipur, Chennai, Mumbai, Agra, Lucknow, Dehradun, etc. Some of the teachers even came from Singapore to attend the workshop.

The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) method requires the teachers to award grades to the students based on their performance in the examination. The assessment exams shall be of two types –formative and summative. The training programme taught the teachers the proper way of designing the assessments as well as evaluating the students.

This initial group of teachers shall then return to their respective schools to train their fellow faculty members. This is a cascade scheme where the initial effort shall initiate a chain reaction of training session all over the nation and as aimed, by dec31st all CBSE teachers shall be trained in the use of the new CCE method.

The outline and structure of this new system of evaluation has been formed by the CBSE in consultation with eminent educationists from IITs, IIMs, and NCERT etc.

The new system shall even give weightage to the behavioural patterns of children and their response to teachers and their peer in the school. There shall be two formative assessments and one summative assessment, in a year.

The two formative assessments shall be diagnostic and remedial in nature and shall be conducted by the teachers at different periods all through the year, mainly through class work, homework, oral questions, quizzes, projects, assignments and tests.

The summative assessment will be made through a written exam, question banks for which shall be updated online by CBSE every two to three months.

It is vital for the success of this system that all teachers understand and execute this method properly.  Similar such workshops shall be conducted for teachers of government schools, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, as well.
