In a novel but enterprising initiative, several Delhi schools have come up with a wonderful idea to handle the huge amount of waste that will get piled up during the Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held next year.
As per the plan, the schools will collect and get all the paper waste and empty plastic bottles during the Games recycled at recycling units. These recycling units will be started by schools themselves in their own premises.
To give a practical training and first-hand exposure to the schools in handling the innovative responsibility, a workshop was organised for various school authorities at the Delhi Secretariat.
Speaking on behalf of his ministry, Environment secretary Dharmendra suggested that plastic and paper waste should be collected from various stadiums on a daily basis and taken to the recycling sites. This, he said, is an effort to counterbalance the carbon footprint that will be left behind the Commonwealth Games.
About 88 Delhi schools will be equipped with recycling plants for the purpose. For dealing with plastic waste, a professional authority would soon be deployed.
This environment-friendly initiative has been taken by the state government to compensate for the concrete jungle it had to erect all around for the games. Its green-initiative also includes construction of energy efficient buildings, city-forest plantation and deployment of eco-friendly public transport.
The government has also set up a ‘green committee’ and has sought advice from several foreign consultants on equalizing the carbon emissions that will get generated during this prestigious event.
