Amid fights between police and students on Tuesday that ensued as the students were denied a peace really, the campus of the Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) in Anantapur turned into a war-zone within few minutes.
Both the warring parties pelted stones at each other and made the situation fairly tense. The warring students were chased down and the police did lathicharging at the campus to dispel them.
Vehicles were damaged, and furniture were broken in the hostels by the police in search of students. Retaliating on the students, police hurled the stones and later batoncharged them to control the violence.
All the drama started when the police did not allow students from taking out a peace rally on the campus. Police prevented them on grounds that they did not have permission. The students were supposed to stage a relay hunger strike to mark the death anniversary of Potti Sriramulu at the campus main gate.
The students were agitated at the news of the death of a painter for the cause of United Andhra. The students planned a similar move to support the cause of Prasad, 40, who had been staging protests in support of United Andhra in the last four days.
Prasad died of heart attack on Tuesday morning at his residence in Akutotapalli village, 3km from the campus. The matter got out of control when the police arrested few students who had gone to the village to offer condolences to the family of Prasad.
Affronted with the move, the SKU students pelted stones from inside the campus. In response, the cops too reacted from the main gate.
