An interesting Swedish survey by the Swedish Institute for Social Research has found that wives with a strong educational background are able to encourage husbands to live a healthy life and thus help them live longer.
The survey which was done on 1.5 million men and women between the age group of 30-59 years, worked on several parameters like education, jobs and annual income; comparing these with factors like the life expectancy, risk of deadly diseases and other ailments also.
The researchers made their comparisons between women who left education at the first instance; those who completed their graduation and those who were postgraduates.
The result statistics were quite interesting. It was clear from the survey that men who were married to women who left school quite early were 25 percent more likely to die an early death themselves, as compared to those married to women who were postgraduates. The men married to women who were graduates were 13 percent more likely to die early as compared to men with postgraduate wives.
The researchers found that the more educated the wife was, more were the chances that she could influence the husband to develop a healthy lifestyle. Better educated wives buy healthy and nutritional foods for the family. Educated women also discourage their husbands from smoking and drinking and they themselves are not interested in living with a man who does so. They are also against drunken and reckless driving, and are more likely to advise their partners against it.
According to the researchers another major reason for such results was the fact that educated women will always stay away from men who are careless drivers, smokers and drinkers. The men too prefer not to pick up wives who are inclined to tick them off on such matters. Therefore, the results are what they are.
However, no such link between a woman’s education and her husband’s life expectancy was found by the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health study.
