On the eve of Teacher’s Day Prime Minister Manmohan Singh very clearly expressed his views that we need to change. Keeping in view tremendous changes occurring in the field of education he sought after the teacher fraternity to protect them against often seen negative features of lack of knowledge, not so very impressive understanding and biases.
Linking these to misinformation and limited learning process he said they actually pose the serious risk of being adopted by the students too. The PM was speaking to the recipients of this year’s Teacher’s Day awards.
Terming his own his own days of being a teacher as the most fulfilling, he observed teachers do indeed play a crucial role in shaping the value and culture of a nation and its populace. And that student often gets directly influenced by the character, behavior and overall value system of the teachers themselves.
At the same time he also lamented minimal roles given to teachers to involve in overall management and policy making of the educational system. Same is the case when it comes to every day functioning of the system.
Expressing his concerns in no uncertain way the PM opined educational reforms are not done till we empower our teachers and bring them to play larger roles in policy making and decision making process.
Manmohan Singh utilized the platform to express his government’s commitment towards providing quality education to all the children irrespective of caste, gender or community. In the same breadth he also came forth with some really nice words for his HRD minister Kapil Sibal, precisely for his transformational work and bringing some badly needed energy and rhythm to the ministry.
He tried to impress upon the teachers that in the changing scenario any kind of punishment or harassment is not allowed in the present laws.
