To produce a talent pool in the legal profession in India, a national level consultative meeting is being planned by the Law Ministry. Speaking about the meeting slated to be held in New Delhi next month, Union minister for law and justice M Veerappa Moily said on Sunday that the purpose of the meeting is to discuss the second-generation reforms in legal education in the country.

Moily was speaking felicitation ceremony for senior lawyer of Mangalore Bar Association M Seetharama Shetty. He said, eminent lawyers, experts and academicians would take part in the meeting to discuss about the issue of restructuring legal education in India. The aim of the meeting is to produce a pool of talent to fill up slots in the legal profession in the country.

The law minister said there was a need to reform the legal education by tapping the existing opportunities both in the domestic and global market. Pointing out that the country is lacking in talented candidates in the law domain to fill up various vacancies, he noted that there are around 15,000 posts of judges, together with the vacant posts at the high courts to be filled up by deserving candidates.

Moily expressed his concern over the fact that there are only a handful of really talented advocates in the country. He said there was a dire need to prepare a large pool of talented legal professionals to meet fill vacancies. He exhorted the legal fraternity to follow the model of IT sector in solving the manpower crunch in the legal sector.
