Like ICSE and CBSE boards, Maharashtra Government too is planning to implement ‘best of five' system for secondary school certificate examinations. The formula will help students in many ways in getting admission in junior colleges.
‘Best of five’ option allows students appearing for SSC exams to choose five subjects in which they can score higher marks while taking admission in colleges.
The government has sought suggestions and objections from students, parents, teachers and educational forums regarding ‘best of five’ option. The decision will be finalise only after reaching a concension on the issue.
Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has already approved the formula and sent it to the state
government for the final decision.
Speaking on the the popularity of the formula, Secretary of the state board T N Tupe said:
“We have received around 240 responses from people. However, nearly 80% are in favour of implementing the best-of-five policy for admissions to junior college.”
School Education Minister Balasaheb Thorat also confirmed that most of the people are in the favour of ‘best of five’ formula. He said:
"I have received a report that parents and schools are positive about the formula which would bring parity for students seeking admission to junior college.”
As per the ‘best of five’ system, a SSC student is allowed to drop any one subject among four, namely mathematics, social science, science and Hindi in which he/she scores less marks at the time of admission. But Marathi and English are compulsory for them.
Likewise, out of six, students can choose five subjects in which they score good marks while taking admission.
Thorat even assured that from this year onwards SSC students will not face any difficulties in online admission process for junior college as school teachers have been trained for the new system this year. Last year, students had to face many difficulties in online admission process for junior college admissions.
