With a view to make All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and National Board of Accreditation (NBA) more transparent, Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal launched internet portals of the two Central regulatory agencies on February 12.

The URLs of the portals are //www.aicte-india.org and //www.nba-india.org. The web portals are billed to be effective tools to ensure efficiency and accountability in the Central agencies.

The web portals have made it possible for the general public to interact with the authorities over their grievances. With the launch of the websites, applications from institutions for approvals will be processed on line leaving no scope for foul play.

The initiative was necessitated in the wake of complaints of corruption against some AICTE officials. Some of them were found guilty of giving approval to institutions without verifying infrastructure and standard of faculty in exchange of illegal gratification.

On the occasion, the AICTE has made an announcement that it has upgraded the intake of engineering and management institutions. As per the norms, new engineering institutions can admit a maximum of 300 students and management institutions can take in 120. Earlier, the figure was 240 and 60 respectively.
