Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has taken a unique initiative as part of its efforts to universalize education. The pioneer in distance learning in the country has opened vistas of educational opportunities for jail inmates that too, free of charge as the university has decided not to levy any fee from the prisoners.
Jail inmates in the country can now access free distance education.
In this context, IGNOU has issued a notice to all its regional directors, heads of schools, divisions and centres. Through the notice university registrar has informed about the university's Board of Management approval to the decision.
The notification reads:
"All jail inmates in the country will now be able to access free and quality education according their choice. This is an opportunity offered to them, to return to the mainstream of life with quality education and future development both morally and vocationally."
The university will not charge examination and late fees.
