IGNOU adds six more FM radio stations to existing 31

To improve and complement the teaching-learning process across the country, six new FM radio stations on education have been launched by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on February 10. The university has already 31 radio stations and these 6 will add to the list.  

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Mohan Jatua launched the new stations. Thiruvanaathapuram, Agra, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Srinagar and Trichy have been the places where these newly launched raid stations will operation.  

The purpose behind the move is to use a low-cost and popular mass medium with the help of interactive formats to improve and supplement the teaching-learning process across the country. More so, the aim is to reach across to learners for their improvement and benefits of education. All six radio stations would be named as Gyan Vani, as the FM radio stations are known. 

From now on, just by calling a toll free numbers, students will have the facility of counselling on different educational matters from experts of NCERT. NGOs working in the field will also help students in matters of counselling related with educational matters. 

From the first launch in 2001, the Gyan Vani stations have come a long way alongside benefiting thousands of students across the country. On completion of a decade of the launch of its educational TV channel Gyan Darshan, IGNOU marked the occasion on Wednesday with celebration. Gyan Darshan has been serving different needs of students on vocational and technical education, higher education and sustainable development.

Gyan Darshan is a concerted programme of IGNOU, Prasar Bharati, ministry of human resource development and ministry of information and broadcasting.

Said Ravi Kant, director of Electronic Media Producing Centre (EMPC) showed his happiness on the launch of the new stations and also appealed to the minister for the waiving of the carriage fee for smooth transmission of the channels on DTH.
