Hoardings against sexual harassment are soon to find place along side the already set ones on anti-ragging within the Delhi University campus. DU students have taken up a new mission to eradicate sexual harassment from their soil.
Students from different colleges under the university have declared solidarity in making their campus fully free from all sorts of sexual abuse. They have requested assistance from the university authorities in the successful implementation of the proposed campaign.
About three hundred DU students assembled in the protest rally organised on Friday. Raising slogans and holding banners, the rally passed through many colleges and various departments before reaching the vice chancellor’s office where a charter of demands was submitted.
The students wanted every person in the campus to participate in the drive to make it a zero-tolerance zone to sexual harassment. They hope to make a "highly visible'' campaign and sought support from all DU students, teachers and also the non-teaching staff.
The students came to realise the importance of taking up such a mission when they saw the alarming result of a survey conducted early this year. The random survey done to determine the impact of ordinance XVD, which has been drafted against sexual harassment, had brought to light that many of the students were unaware both about sexual harassment occurring around them and also about its remedial steps.
The students behind the anti-sexual harassment drive meets on every Tuesday to finalise their course of action. Many ‘freedom marches’ have also been organised as part of the endeavour.
