Exams for Class X and XII students of the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) have commenced yesterday. This year the Class X students will be assessed as per the new grading system of CBSE.

The central board has initiated a new grading system for Class IX and X students from the academic year 2009-10. According to the new system grades will be given on a nine point scale depending upon the performance of the student in each subject.

A CBSE spokesperson said that only per subject grades will be shown in the 'statement of subject wise performance' to all students. Students who score 91-100 marks will be given A1 grade; those who score 81-90 marks will make an A2 grade. B1 grade will be awarded for those who score 71 to 80 marks and B 2 grade will be for the students with 61 to 70 marks. Similarly, C1 grade will be awarded for 51-60 marks, students who score marks ranging from 41 to 50 will get C2 and students with 33-40 marks will get C3 grade.

E1 and E2 grades will also be given to students who score marks in the range of  21-32 and below 20 respectively.

The main purpose behind introducing new grading system for Class X exams is to minimise classification of students over marks and hence to reduce unnecessary pressure due to ensuing competition among students. It will also help to maintain a better learning environment.

Around 9.02 lakh students are appearing for the CBSE Class X exams this year under grading system while more than 6.99 lakh candidates are giving Class XII exams from over 5,300 centres across the country.
