The Sri Lankan government has accepted the free higher education proposal put forward by the University of Madras (Madras University) to make education accessible to the Tamil refugees living in various camps in Sri Lanka.

Madras University has initiated efforts to fulfil its promise on offering free distance education to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.

Vice-chairman of University Grants Commission, Prof. Ved Prakash has accused that only a small portion of the total funds that are set apart for educational purposes under the 11th Five-Year Plan has been released by the Centre.

In an effort to make education easily accessible to physically impaired and disadvantaged candidates in rural areas, University of Madras Vice-Chancellor G Thiruvasagam has announced of providing free education to physically-challenged and incentives to underprivileged.
