The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Tuesday launched an online registration portal for the Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel under project Akashdeep, which enables airmen to complete their bachelor's degree, officials said.

"This could be a model for many countries in terms of size and services.

We are getting empowered by providing such capacity and showing that a university too can undergo such collaborations," IGNOU vice-chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai said.

With an aim of reaping the benefits of modern technological advancements for facilitating distance education, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), has decided to launch a certificate programme in English, using Nokia mobile's Ovi Life Tools.

This strategic collaboration will interweave technology with education, so that this programme in functional English can initially be launched in six districts of Maharashtra. Once successful its launch in the rest of the nation will be contemplated.

Govt panel recommends legal action against erring deemed varsities

Some of the deemed universities of the country might find themselves in a tight spot as a government panel set up to review their functioning found them running unapproved distance learning programmes and has recommended legal action against them after the discontinuation of the courses with immediate effect.

IGNOU plans to add more community colleges

Community colleges are going to be more in numbers in the days to come. IGNOU has chalked out proper plans to add to the existing number of ‘community’ colleges in the country. The number of such colleges is set to increase more than three times to the present ones. From the existing 160 such colleges, 500 would be the precise number of community colleges across the country in next two years.

Over 28,000 foreign students from 35 countries in IGNOU

Prof. VN Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has announced that more than 28,000 foreign students, from 35 countries, had already registered under the various academic programmes offered the university. Out of this, thirty-eight percent are female students who have enrolled in different graduation courses like the BCA, MCA, MBA and B.Ed Prof.

IGNOU’s admissions to B.Tech programmes put on hold

Following the concern of the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), over the various distance education engineering programmes being run by IGNOU and their recognition, the varsity has put on hold admissions to the B.Tech courses for the time being.

The varsity has taken this decision in order to gain time to resolve the doubts and objections sprouting from the MHRD and AICTE, regarding the programmes. The decision was taken in the faculty meeting of the School of Engineering and Technology.
